How to Route Existing Phone Numbers into HighLevel Call Systems

Learn how to set up carrier-level call forwarding from existing mobile and landline numbers directly into HighLevel without changing your established business phone number.

Nexus Hub editorial · 5 min read

Transitioning your agency or client sub-accounts to HighLevel telecommunications often introduces a common operational dilemma: established business phone numbers. When a brand has spent years printing phone numbers on signage, business cards, vehicle wraps, and online directories, changing the primary phone number is rarely a viable option.

Rather than immediately porting numbers or forcing clients to update their public marketing materials, carrier-level call forwarding provides an efficient bridge. By setting up routing rules directly with your current telecommunications provider, all incoming calls pass directly into HighLevel numbers where automated workflows, call tracking, and Voice AI agents can process them seamlessly.

Carrier Routing for Verizon, Xfinity, and Spectrum

Carriers operating on the Verizon network utilize standardized star-code sequences to manage inbound call routing. These commands are executed directly from the phone keypad on the originating line.

  • Unconditional Forwarding (All Calls): Dial *72 followed immediately by your 10-digit HighLevel phone number, then press Call.
  • Conditional Forwarding (Missed Calls Only): Dial *71 followed by your HighLevel phone number, then press Call.
  • Deactivation: Dial *73 and press Call to return routing back to the native handset.

After dialing the activation code, remain on the line until you hear a confirmation tone or network message confirming that the routing rule has been updated.

Setting Up Routing on AT&T Mobile and Landlines

AT&T applies different activation procedures depending on whether you are configuring a mobile device or a fixed landline system.

For AT&T Mobile lines, forwarding is enabled using standard GSM star codes:

  • Enable Mobile Forwarding: Dial *21 followed by the destination HighLevel number, then press Call.
  • Disable Mobile Forwarding: Dial #21# and press Call.

For AT&T Business Landlines, the system requires a verification check during setup:

  1. Lift the handset, dial *72, and listen for the standard dial tone.
  2. Enter the target HighLevel phone number.
  3. Listen for a confirmation tone. The network will then place an automated test call to the HighLevel number.
  4. Answer the incoming test call on the HighLevel line to complete the activation process.
  5. To disable forwarding on landlines later, pick up the line and dial *73.

Configuring Call Forwarding on T-Mobile

T-Mobile uses an expanded star-code format that specifies country codes and exact routing conditions across its cellular network.

  • Forward All Calls: Dial **21*1 followed by the 10-digit HighLevel number, add # at the end, and press Call (e.g., **21*15555555555#).
  • Forward Unanswered Calls Only: Dial **61*1 followed by the 10-digit HighLevel number, add # at the end, and press Call.
  • Deactivate Forwarding: Dial ##21# for unconditional forwarding or ##61# for conditional forwarding, then press Call.

Universal Fallback Codes and Best Practices

If your client uses a regional carrier or specialized Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) not explicitly detailed above, standard North American telephony defaults usually apply.

  • Default Unconditional Forwarding: Dial *72 + HighLevel Number (Disable via *73).
  • Default Conditional Forwarding: Dial *92 + HighLevel Number (Disable via *93).
Note

Always verify carrier per-minute costs before establishing high-volume forwarding rules. Certain legacy landline plans charge additional usage fees for forwarded calls.

When deploying call forwarding across active marketing campaigns, adhere to these operational checks to ensure uninterrupted service:

  1. Perform immediate test calls from an external line to verify that caller ID, call recording, and triggers fire properly inside HighLevel.
  2. Confirm that your inbound call workflows, IVR menus, or Voice AI assistants are published and active before configuring carrier forwarding.
  3. If using conditional forwarding (missed calls only), verify how many rings occur before the transfer initiates to ensure standard carrier voicemail does not intercept the call first.
