Running paid ad campaigns without call attribution creates a critical blind spot for marketing operations. When client phones ring, proving whether a specific campaign, creative set, or search term generated that call requires dynamic phone number replacement.

HighLevel addresses this attribution gap through Number Pools. By dynamically swapping phone numbers on a landing page based on visitor sessions, the platform links inbound phone conversations directly back to original traffic sources and search keywords.

Understanding the Mechanics of Number Pools

A number pool is a collection of virtual phone numbers assigned to a sub-account. When a prospect visits a landing page, HighLevel identifies the session and dynamically displays a unique phone number from the pool.

When the visitor dials the displayed number, the platform forwards the call to the destination line while recording campaign parameters, referral channels, and keyword data.

  • Swapping Number: The static phone number hardcoded on the website that gets detected and replaced.
  • Forwarding Number: The client's actual destination phone line where incoming calls are received.
  • Pool Size: The total quantity of virtual numbers reserved to manage concurrent site visitors simultaneously.

Creating a Number Pool in HighLevel

Setting up a pool requires establishing the destination line, defining swapping rules, and reserving adequate virtual numbers for incoming web traffic.

  1. Navigate to Settings and select Phone Numbers inside the target sub-account.
  2. Open the Add Number menu and select Add Number Pool.
  3. Choose Visitors Activity to track users across all inbound traffic sources.
  4. Assign a clear label to the pool, such as Google Ads Campaign Pool.
  5. Set the pool size. A minimum of four numbers is recommended to handle overlapping site visitors.
  6. Enter the external forwarding number where the client receives calls. Do not use another platform tracking line here to avoid routing loops.
  7. Input the swapping number exactly as it appears in plain text on the client's website.
  8. Select the local area codes or toll-free numbers, configure optional whisper messages or call recording settings, and activate the pool.

Installing the Tracking Script

After activating the pool, the system generates a dedicated JavaScript snippet that enables dynamic number replacement on web pages.

  1. Access the number pool management list and locate the newly created pool.
  2. Open the pool options menu and select Number Pool Info to view the tracking code.
  3. Copy the provided Normal Snippet Code.
  4. Navigate to Sites and open the target Funnel or Website settings.
  5. Paste the script into the Body Tracking code section to execute it across all pages, or insert it into the Footer Tracking section of a specific page.
  6. Save the changes and confirm the tracking script is live.
Note

The phone number rendered on the landing page must exist as standard HTML plain text. The script cannot identify or replace numbers embedded inside images or custom canvas elements.

Mapping URL Parameters and Verifying Setup

To capture granular keyword performance from ad networks like Google Ads, tracking parameters must be appended to the destination URLs in your campaigns.

Adding parameter strings like ?keyword={keyword} to final URL destinations allows HighLevel to pass search terms through to the call record upon swap.

To verify installation, open the target URL in a private or incognito browser window. Confirm that the static phone number updates automatically to one of the assigned numbers from the pool.

Once live calls are logged, analyze conversion data by reviewing the Call Reporting tab. Match high-converting search keywords directly against campaign ad spend to optimize client campaigns based on actual phone volume.
